Dear Mr./Ms/Mrs. FirstName LastName,
As one of your constituents, I am writing to ask for your help in supporting a cause important to me: Reducing dangerous plastics contained in tobacco waste.
Canada sells twenty-seven billion cigarettes annually. Cigarette waste is the number one form of litter contaminating our ecosystems, wildlife and food chains with known carcinogens and micro-plastics. Harmful to our environment, health and economy; this issue spans across parties to impact all Canadian citizens.
We already have a deposit system on many products, funded by an environmental fee successfully applied to batteries and aluminum cans. Similarly, a system is already in place to safely recycle cigarette waste, by separating compostables from toxic waste and plastics. However, this system is rarely used as awareness campaigns have not stopped the spread of litter onto the ground, into our food chain and into our water supplies.
To solve this problem, the “Ban the Butt” campaign of LoveWhereYouLiveBC will take a petition before the House of Commons to ask that the plastics used in tobacco products are included in the ban on single-use and dangerous plastics proposed by the sitting government. We suggest this to include a ban on the sale of non-compostable cigarettes and tobacco products that use single-use plastics, apply a minimum Refundable Deposit Fee of $.05 per tobacco product to be used for supporting its collection and recycling, and a minimum $.05 fee per tobacco product to support the development of recycling infrastructure.
Now is the vital time to take Canada from growing the problem to leading the solution. I ask that you support this valuable petition, share these concerns with the Minister of the Environment, and request fair legislation that supports the health and future of Canadian citizens, wildlife and natural spaces.
Your support now will demonstrate your dual commitment to the environmental and health concerns of your constituents, as well as the image of our country as a leader in positive change on the world stage.
Thank you for your commitment to these efforts. I look forward to receiving your reply.
Sincerely,
